Verification or certification audit? Check by NDIS registration group

Your registration groups decide your audit. If even one group needs a certification audit, the whole application does. On the NDIS Commission register, about 73% of registered providers hold at least one certification group.

Who this affects

Anyone applying for NDIS registration, re-registering, or adding registration groups.

A verification audit is for lower-risk, lower-complexity supports. It is a desktop review of your documents by an approved quality auditor. Many providers on this pathway are already professionally regulated, for example through AHPRA.

A certification audit is for higher-risk or more complex supports. It has two stages: a desktop audit, then an on-site audit that may include visiting your sites and interviewing staff and participants. Providers who complete a certification audit then have a mid-term audit 18 months into their registration.

There is no fee to register with the NDIS Commission, but you pay the auditor. The Commission doesn't set audit prices; it says the cost depends on the size and scale of your organisation and the number of participants you support, and recommends getting quotes from more than one approved quality auditor.

After you submit your application, the Commission sends an Initial scope of audit that confirms your audit type. The table below is the Commission's general guide.

What to do

  1. List your current and planned registration groups and check them against the table.
  2. If one group pushes you to certification, decide whether you really need it before you apply — adding or removing groups can change your audit.
  3. Get at least two quotes from approved quality auditors using your Initial scope of audit.
